I recently took my driver's license test (written test) and obtained a temporary license. Here is a summary of my experience.

    ◉ Reference site

    ◉ My situation

    • I have already obtained a driver's license in Japan.

    • I took the written test only this time.

    • My husband suggested that I take the road practice and test (since I haven't driven in 9 years).

    ◉Reservation

    • Called MDV to make a reservation (Thursday at 11am. It was empty at first. after that, it got really crowded.)

    ◉ What to bring

    • Application Form (I forgot it)

    • Japanese driver's license/international driver's license (not necessary)

    • Passport

    • Social Security Number Card (SSN)

    • Green Card (PERMANENT RESIDENT CARD)

    • A document with my name and address on it (maybe they asked for it because I didn't fill out an application form)

Reference site: ADOT Travel ID Document Guide

    【Things I screwed up】

    • I didn't do the Application Form.

I went to the test center without having applied for the Application Form in advance. I was able to fill out the application form verbally at the counter service. I was asked for a document with my name and address on it together to verify my address, but I didn't have it with me and I was about to be sent home. I found an email from the bank that had my name and address on it, so I took a screen shot and submitted it.

    ◉ Study method

It takes a lot of time to read the manual right off the bat, so I think it's best to do 1) a few practice tests, 2) a quick read of the manual, 3) a quick read of the main points, and 4) a few practice tests.

Mock Tests (The actual test was almost the same as the "ADOT Practice Tests").

    Read the manual

    Read the main points

◉ Flow of the day and exam

    1) Reception

    • Tell them what you want, signature, take a picture, get a number for line.

    2) Wait

    • Wait for your number to be called (about 5 minutes since it was empty)

    3) Counter service

    • Apply for the application, pay the fee

    4) Take the exam

    • PC, choose your name, no cell phones allowed, pass if you answer 24 out of 30 questions correctly, you can check the correct/incorrect answers for each question at the end as well as the pass/fail.

    • I forgot to measure it, but I think it took me less than 40 minutes, I passed it in one time.

    5) Return to the counter.

    • Tell them that the test is over.

    • Receive your provisional license certificate and receipt. (The card will be mailed to you at a later date, you cannot take any questions or results home with you.)

◉ MDV I went and fees

    • Arizona MDV (50 S Beck Ave, Chandler, Arizona 85226)

    • 7 dollars (written test only)

That's it. I will add more information about the road test here after I take it.

    Hi Aya,

Great job on passing the written exam.

Do you plan on being an Uber/Lyft Driver?

Hi Prince Harry, thank you for comment.

I haven't driven in nine years so I'm worried about my road test.

I won't be a good Uber or Lyft driver.

    Hello Aya,

If you still remember, how long did you wait to get your permit ID after you passed your permit test? I've been waiting for a week to receive my permit ID and I was wondering how long I have to wait to get it because I want to book a driving lesson but without my ID, I can't make an apointment. Thank you!

Hi Yuki! I'm sorry for replying late. I think it took two weeks to receive the permit ID. I hope you got the permit ID without problems as well as driver's license.
